SOUTHERN HUMANITIES COUNCIL

BASIC BRANDING

STATIONERY

PRINT DESIGN

The Southern Humanities Council first reached out to me in January of 2023 to design their program for the 2023 conference.  At the time they didn’t have much in the way of a visual identity for their organization, but we were able to collaborate on a fun program design for the conference happening that year. The Southern Humanities Council is a non-profit academic organization that focuses on providing a platform for students, professors and researchers alike to present their work in the Southern United States.

Fast forward to the summer of 2023 when they reached out again to collaborate once again, but this time to create a visual identity for their organization. The tricky part was that they are a non-profit organization with a small budget. Instead of taking them through my full branding process (the organization has also been around since the 1940s, so they also had a decent grasp on WHO their audience is and WHY they do what they do), I provided a slimmed down and basic branding service for them. This included a Primary Logo, one mark, font system, color palette and brand guidelines. They opted to add in a secondary logo as well before the project was done.

I created a visual identity that was both honoring of their academic traditions, but also brought them into the modern age. The was accomplished with using a mega traditional serif font, accented with an angular and modern sans serif font, and a basic linear book stack illustration. The color palette is composed of colors that are all very traditional colors on their own, but combined create a unique perspective on a traditional color palette. The secondary logo is an even more modern take , with the book stack implied by the linear shapes that encase each word of the organization.

These elements were used to create a basic stationery design for them and the guidelines helped them to implement the needed changes to their own website. We have since completed the 2024 conference program.
